Vendakka Pachadi | Lady's finger in Curd gravy

Pachadi is one of the essential side dish in a Kerala sadya (grand feast). This dish can be prepared with ginger, cucumber, bitter gourd etc. Pineapple Pachadi is another side dish served in a Kerala Sadya.

As Onam is nearing by, i would like to share with you all this simple and tasty traditional side dish for making your sadya perfect and complete. No need to wait till Onam, make it any day and make your everyday meal a tasty one!!

Most of the traditional recipes, i learnt from my mom-in-law, who patiently explains me the recipe and helps me too...This is one such dish and i like the tangy and spicy taste of this dish that i make this every now and then.

Ingredients

1 and 1/2 - 2 cups
Lady's finger (cut into thin roundels)
Salt to taste
1 cup Curd (beaten)
1/4 tsp Turmeric powder (optional)
1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
2 - 3 tsp Coconut (freshly grated)
2 Green chilli
2 tsp Coconut Oil

For tempering

1 tsp Mustard seeds
5 Curry leaves
2 Dry Red chilli
2 tsp Coconut Oil

Method
  • Heat oil in a kadai. Add the lady's finger pieces in it and stir fry in low flame till they are nicely cooked.
  • In the mean time, grind coconut, green chilli and turmeric powder into a smooth paste by adding little curd. Mix this mixture into the rest of the beaten curd. Mix well.
  • Pour this mixture into the stir fried lady's finger. Adjust salt.
  • Keep on low flame and let it cook till the gravy starts to bubble.
  • Once it starts to bubble, turn off the heat.
  • For tempering: Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and when it starts to splutter, add curry leaves and dry red chilli.
  • Pour this tempering into the prepared gravy. Mix well.
  • Serve it hot with steamed rice.

* I usually take the quantity of the ingredients as per my taste. So you can always adjust the spices as per your taste*
