Aloo Bonda (Potato Dumpling)

First of all i have to thank my neighbour Ms. Bhavani Tata who introduced me to a Bengali snack "Aloo chop". A very tasty snack. It had a similar taste of Aloo Bonda. She has promised me to give me the recipe. (Once i get it, i will share it with you all.) When i was enjoying Aloo Chop, i thought of making Aloo Bonda. And that's how i ended up making this snack. It is a perfect snack with tea or coffee.

Aloo bonda is also known as Batata Vada in Mumbai. Aloo bonda is a typical South Indian snack. It is a deep fried savoury snack stuffed with potato and spices mixture. Aloo bonda is crispy outside and soft inside.

Method

  • To make the stuffing, heat oil in a kadai. Put mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let it splutter.
  • After that add green chilli, ginger and curry leaves. After sometime add onion and salt. When it changes its colour, add red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Mix well.
  • Now add the boiled mashed potato and mix thoroughly till everything is mixed properly. Take it off from heat.
  • Add coriander leaves and lemon juice. Mix well and keep this aside.
  • For making the batter, take a bowl and mix gram flour, rice flour, salt, baking powder, ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder and red chilli powder with water as required. Make a smooth thick batter with no lumps in it.
  • Heat oil in a kadai for deep frying. Make small balls of the stuffing and dip it in the batter and put in the medium hot oil.
  • When the balls turn golden brown colour transfer it into a tissue paper.
  • Serve it hot with any sauce of your choice or with coconut chutney.
